Why Your Contracting Business Is Not Getting Calls from Google (And How to Fix It)

By Luxton Group · 7 min read

You built a website. You claimed your Google Business Profile. You asked a few customers to leave reviews. And yet the phone still rings almost exclusively from referrals, not Google. This is the most common situation we see from trades businesses across the GTA, and it has specific, fixable causes.

Reason 1: You’re optimized for your business name, not search intent

Most contractors build a website that talks about their company: who they are, how long they’ve been in business, their values. That content doesn’t rank for anything because nobody searches for “Maple Leaf Contracting Inc.” They search for “roofer Mississauga” or “drywall contractor Brampton.” Your website needs pages explicitly built around those search phrases, not your company story.

The fix: Build service pages and location pages that target the exact phrases your customers search. “Roofing company Mississauga” needs its own page. “Eavestrough installation Brampton” needs its own page. Each page is a separate ranking opportunity.

Reason 2: Your Google Business Profile is incomplete or stale

A GBP that was set up three years ago and hasn’t been touched since is sending Google a signal: this business isn’t active. Google’s local algorithm favours active, regularly-updated profiles. “Active” means recent reviews, recent photos, regular GBP posts, and up-to-date service listings.

The fix: Audit your GBP against a complete setup checklist. Add every service you offer. Update your photos (add at least 5 new ones immediately). Set your service area to every city you actually serve. If you haven’t posted in the last 30 days, post today.

Reason 3: You don’t have enough reviews, or they’ve stopped coming in

In the GTA, the businesses ranking in the top 3 of the Google Maps pack for most contracting keywords have 30 to 80+ reviews. If you have 8 reviews from 4 years ago, you’re not competing. Worse, if all your reviews are from the same period, Google may see your business as inactive.

The fix: Build a systematic review request process. After every completed job, send a text message (texts have 98% open rates; email rarely gets read) with a direct link to your Google review page. Automate it so it happens within 2 hours of job completion, while the customer is still happy.

Reason 4: Your website doesn’t mention the cities you serve

If your website says “serving the Greater Toronto Area” but never mentions Mississauga, Brampton, or Oakville specifically, Google has no reason to rank you for searches in those cities. The algorithm needs explicit geographic signals: city names in headings, in content, in page titles, and in your URL structure.

The fix: Create a dedicated page for each major city you serve. Keep the content unique on each page. Don’t just swap the city name into a template. Reference local neighbourhoods, local specifics, anything that signals genuine service in that area.

Reason 5: Your site loads slowly or isn’t mobile-first

Over 70% of local service searches happen on mobile. If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load, or if it requires pinching and zooming to use, Google will rank you below competitors with faster, mobile-optimized sites, regardless of how good your other signals are. Page speed is a confirmed Google ranking factor.

The fix: Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights (free). If your mobile score is below 70, your site needs work. Key fixes: compress images, use a fast host, minimize plugins, and make sure your theme is built for mobile.

The bottom line

Getting calls from Google isn’t luck or a matter of being established long enough. It’s the direct result of having the right signals in place: an optimized GBP, a keyword-targeted website, consistent reviews, and active content. Every one of these is fixable. Most can be addressed within 30 days. The businesses at the top of your local map pack have simply done the work, and most of them aren’t your best competitors. They’re just the ones who started first.
